Chinese embassy renews support to Imbuto's scholarship programme

The Chinese Embassy in Rwanda has renewed its support to Imbuto Foundation, with a donation of $29,300 to fund scholarships for 100 children from vulnerable backgrounds.

The support will be channeled through Imbuto Foundation’s scholarship programme: “Edified Generation.”

The donation was announced by Henry H. Rao, Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda, at a meeting with Sandrine Umutoni, the director-general of Imbuto Foundation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to the effect was signed by the two representatives yesterday in Kigali.

The support is in the framework of China-Africa People-to-People Friendship Action, an initiative launched by the Chinese government to support and promote exchanges and cooperation between NGOs, women and youth from China and Africa.

The Chinese embassy greatly supports the development of education in Rwanda and strives to do this through helping disadvantaged students under Imbuto Foundation’s scholarship programme – Edified Generation.

Imbuto Foundation and the Chinese embassy have signed MoUs in support of the scholarship programme – that supports brilliant but financially challenged students – since 2013.

Established by First Lady Jeannette Kagame in 2001, Imbuto Foundation implements a holistic approach to uplift the most vulnerable communities through education, health, and socio-economic programmes.

‘Edified Generation’

The ‘Edified Generation’ scholarship programme was initiated in 2003 to financially support students from economically vulnerable backgrounds in their pursuit of education.

Beneficiaries of the programme receive assistance of up to $300 per year, to help pay for their living costs in boarding schools, uniforms and other scholastic supplies.

Each year, through an annual holiday camp, the scholars are equipped with entrepreneurship, public speaking, leadership and other life skills, among others.

Over the last 15 years, more than 7,000 scholarships have been awarded to secondary-school boys and girls.
